Well, it’s been a reeeaaallly long time since I’ve blogged and today is turning out to be a day full of stuff to talk about. So I’m biting the bullet and getting back into the swing of things. First things first, I started back to work today after being on maternity leave for 11 weeks. Yep, my sentiments exactly…this stinks. I thought since this was my 2nd pregnancy that going back to work would be less of a big deal. Especially since all the kids went to daycare last Wednesday and yesterday. But as I was laying William down for the night last night my eyes swelled with tears. I turned to Rocky, who was holding Anna and I could tell he felt so sorry for me. So I held them both a little longer than usual last night and then went off to bed. When I awoke this morning all seemed fine. It wasn’t until Charlie flashed me his beautiful smile and I was kissing them all goodbye that I started to cry again. If anyone reading this should win the lottery, please consider paying my mortgage and bills for 5 years so that I can quit my job and stay home with them.
The ride to work didn’t improve upon my day. In fact, I turned around once in the neighborhood to go back for my ID badge. And then I made it 2 miles before I realized I didn’t have my purse. 15 minutes after I said goodbye to the kids, I finally made it to 85. And 85 didn’t disappoint. The new traffic pattern due to the widening project is apparently proving difficult for motorists to navigate. I think we’re seeing a wreck about 3 out of every 4 trips we make. Although the widening is occurring in Cabarrus County, I think I saw orange barrels all the way to Mallard Creek. And the drive on 77 was even worse. Apparently a wreck there had traffic backed up in all lanes for miles. What should have taken me 35 minutes to drive took 1 ½ hours today. Thank goodness Rocky remembered to fill the van up with gas.
Once I arrived at work, I learned that my desktop has been disconnected and my new laptop was put in its place. But a contractor working on the PC deployment project was using the laptop so I had to hook my desktop up if I wanted to check my email. I did have stroke of good luck in that I actually remembered my passwords so I was able to login just about the time some arrived to give me another laptop. That process ended up being very painless. In fact, I was able to steal a few minutes so that I could pump milk. However, after my second pumping, I realized the bottles weren’t getting cold, I assume because the fridge was broken. And if you’ve ever seen the refrigerators in my building, you’ll understand when I say there is no way I can fit my bottles (that must stay upright) in them. Luckily I brought 2 small freezer packs and one keeps them perfectly cool.
For lunch, I decided I would have a favorite salad from the restaurant in my building. I called down and after 2 minutes of no one, I decided to walk down and order myself. To my surprise, the restaurant was being remodeled and was closed for the week. So I ended up getting in the van and going to Taco Bell. Not exactly what I was hoping for but better than nothing. On my way back to work, I heard on the radio that 85 north was closed between Speedway and Poplar Tent. Speedway is the exit I take to pick up the kids. Traffic was already backed up well before that…Harris Blvd. to be exact. And according to the news, it may not open until after 3pm. For those that drive in Charlotte traffic, that equates to a major delay for anyone driving that way. I fully expect it to take me 2 hours to get home. So Rocky will have to make do and pick up the kids today himself. That’s a major bummer for someone who can’t wait to see her kids faces. And I hope my little ice packs survive the trip. I may have to turn the AC on and freeze my feet so I can keep the cooler cold. And did I mention that when I got back to my desk my taco was flat as a pancake. I’ve seen crickets with more meet on them. Oh well, at least the nachos were good!
