Everywhere we go these days, people like to stop us to ask if William and Anna are twins. And to prevent Charlie from feeling like they are special and he is not, we usually reply by saying something like “yes, and this is their big brother Charlie”. Then they usually ask us how old our children are and when they learn how close in age they are, they inevitable say something like “don’t you know what causes that” or “what were you thinking”? Well, to be quite frank, at the time we were thinking with our sexual organs and yes, we’re well aware of what can happen. That’s sorta the whole point.
The first couple of times we had this conversation, I’ll admit it was humorous. But the 20th time we had this conversation, we began to realize that society apparently no longer looks at having children as a joyous and fulfilling event. Gone are the days of families having 6, 8, even 10 kids. God forbid a family should have children as long as the good Lord let them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should be a pound puppy factory if you can’t support your children. For Pete’s sake, stop doing the deed in that case. But if your children are fed, clothed, have a roof over their heads and have the support of both a father and mother (apparently I’m wearing my big girl britches today), then by all means, ’do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around. That’s what it’s all about. RIGHT ARM!’
Seriously though, I’m sure people don’t realize that when they say something like that it does make us feel like they’re questioning our choice to have children close in age. Granted, we didn’t realize we’d have two at one time but I can honestly say that so far, it has been so much fun. That’s not to say it hasn’t been hard or it won’t be hard in the future. But as the good Lord says, He won’t give us more than we (meaning He and we) can handle. I wouldn’t want it any other way!
Tara, I just love you honesty. (Oh and these sweet blessings!) People always think I am crazy when I tell them I have 4....and if God's will we would have had more!!! I love a big family! Oh well God blessed me with 3 sweet Heglar babies and a Wyatt and a Kendra. Thanks for sharing!
