“Send me a picture…” That was my Mother’s response to the news that we were having twins. I still think she thought we were joking. She was at a restaurant with Dad, Uncle Bob and Aunt Bim. We had just come out of our appointment and we were still in a state of shock about the news. Mom had called during our appointment and we knew she was worried so we called her first. She kept asking how everything was. Rocky kept saying things like “they are doing fine”, “their measurements look great”, and “they looked great”. She didn’t really catch what we were saying. Then Rocky said something like “both of them look great” and the light went off. She said “twins?” “Yes” we both said. “Can you believe twins?” “Send me a picture” she said. When she got the picture, I think she screamed it out loud. The waiter and several patrons said to tell us congratulations. Needless to say, Dad was too excited as well. He's thinking he almost has enough for a baseball team. And Uncle Bob and Aunt Bim, they're excited b/c when all 4 grand-newphews or nieces visit Mom and Dad, they'll all get to hold one. No more having to share.
Next Rocky sent a picture to Kyle and Michelle and asked Michelle what it meant? Her response…”I think you’re having twins. Oh my gosh!” As happy as she was, she too was in a state of shock. I think everyone is when they first hear. Some say “better you than me” (which is a horrible thing to say to someone, by the way). Others say “Wow…just wow”. It’s just not something you can easily digest at once. It takes time to sink in. Apparently, a lot of time.
Finally we went to Rocky’s parent’s house to pick Charlie up. Eddie wasn’t home yet so Linda got to see the pictures first. After looking, looking and looking again, she asked why we were staring at her. Rocky asked her if she saw anything unusual. She said it kinda looked like two. I replied “there are two”. The look on her face was priceless. When Eddie got home, he got to see the pictures. He quickly noticed something was up. Rocky asked him what he saw. He looked back down and said “….two grandbabies!” I think the smile is still on his face. Eddie Heglar sure does love grandbabies.
We slowly told our extended families and then our close friends. Finally we made a public announcement on Facebook and well, pretty much everyone knows now.
I’m now 11 ½ weeks along and my stomach is definitely getting bigger. I’ve been terribly, terribly sick and lost about 10 pounds so far. I hope this morning sickness goes away soon. I hate to complain because I know there are women who would go through anything to be able to have a baby. But just like with Charlie, my body does not enjoy being pregnant.
So, I go back to the doctor Friday (Feb 11) for my 12 week checkup. I have no idea if they will do another u/s or not. All I know is that around 16-18 weeks I’ll go for a 2nd level u/s for some in-depth scans to check the babies, cords, placentas, etc. We’ll also be able to find out the sexes, if the babies cooperate.
For now, I don’t really refer to the babies as “twins”. Since they’re fraternal, I just think of them as 2 babies. To me, twins are identical, like our cousins Mallory and Mia. So we tell people we’re having 2 babies, not twin babies. Regardless of what we do or don’t call them, they’re getting bigger every day. And before you know it, they will be here. AAAAAAHHHHHHH!
