Last night Rocky and I took a Baby 101 class at the local hospital. It's called "Healthy Newborns" and it lasted 2 1/2 hours. First of all, getting your husband to attend a 2 1/2 hour long class on babies is a feat in itself. Thankfully, Rocky played the good husband role (as he often does) and graciously agreed to attend the class.
There were 6 couples in the class. All but 1 were having a boy. We had the latest due date, although everyone was due in March. We were each given a baby, diaper and receiving blanket. (Shout out to Susan O'Daniel, our instructor!!!) Our baby looked rather large but Susan estimated it was a 7lb 13oz baby. So realistically, it's probably the size we'll have (yikes!!!).
We started by watching a video on what babies look like when they're born. She wanted us to be familiar with the icky stuff that covers a baby when it first comes out so that we weren't startled when we saw our own babies. Next they talked about what happens while you're in the hospital and then they moved on to swaddling. This is where we got to practice. Rocky went first. He carefully folded the blanket around plastic Cletus until he was snug as a bug in a rug. I must admit, he was excellent at swaddling. Me, not so much.
Yes, plastic Cletus is "rockin' on" (that's my baby boy!).
Then we moved on to diaper changing. I don't know if Rocky every actually changed plastic Cletus' diaper but he's already got experience where I had none. I have to admit, my diaper looked pretty good (even Rocky wouldn't admit it).
Last we learned infant CPR and what to do if a baby is choking. We both got to practice compressions and we simulated breathing. Hopefully, we'll never have to use these lessons.
All in all it was a very informative class. Along the way we learned a little about bathing, too much about what solid diaper contents can mean, and other helpful hints about babies. As first time parents, I strongly suggest any other first time parent see if their local hospital offers these types of classes. Ours was free!
