The last couple of days we have noticed that Charlie seemed a little fussy when you attempt to change his diaper on the changing table. I shrugged it off to him being tired, hungry or just restless. Last night after I changed his diaper, I attempted to put his nightgown on him so I could put him to bed. Once again, he began to scrunch his little face, make lots of “eh” sounds, turn is head from side to side, waive his arms, and kick his tiny little feet. It took me a couple of extra seconds to get his diaper but I did, none the less. What happened next was quite funny, scary and entertaining. I bent down to pull his gown out of the drawer with my right hand while keeping my left hand on his stomach. I do this so I can feel his body movement to know if he’s going to turn over and in which direction. Then I can quickly grab the correct leg to keep him from falling. As I opened the drawer, I felt his stomach rise up in the air. As I looked up, I saw that he had bent his knees, pushed up to raise his body, and now he was pushing his feet so that his body was being propelled backwards. He pushed so hard that his moved about 12 inches, which was enough to move his head off the changing pad and onto the hard dresser. Now, don’t worry. There was not a crack or thud to be heard. His head slid, not banged. But the scary part was that he has now learned how he can propel himself.
I figured I had at least another month before he came anywhere close to learning how to crawl. And I’ve heard of babies learning how to crawl backwards before forwards. But I never even entertained the thought that my child would learn how to crawl on his BACK! And if that wasn’t bad enough, once he got off the changing pad, he quickly flipped over onto this stomach and where he could have grabbed the edge of the dresser and pulled himself off. So I picked him up, turned him back over and laid him back down. I got the gown over his head and there he went again…bam, boom, bada-bing…just like that he was facing the floor like a mountain lion before it lands on its prey. Once again, I picked him up and turned him over. Rocky was standing at the door with his jaw agape (that’s wide open for you non-words for free playing folks). All in all, it took me almost 10 minutes to get his nightgown on. The only thing that helped is getting the gown pulled down so that his arms couldn’t move…sorta like a mini-straightjacket.
I had hoped this was a one time event but this morning, I watched as Rocky changed his clothes and he did it again. This time I video taped him so we could show him when he grows up. It’s so funny. If I can get the video cut down in size, I’ll try to upload it later for your viewing pleasure. So where does Lowly the worm come into play you might ask? Well, Charlie’s wiggliness reminded me of a worm and recently I recalled the Lowly the Worm character from my childhood. I used to love Lowly. I read Lowly books and watched Lowly TV shows. Anyhoo, I’m digressing now. The moral of this story for us is…don’t turn your head even for 1 second. He may be little, he may can only wiggle, but he can get into all kinds of things now…just like Lowly the Worm used to do.
Hasta la vista!
ok, I think I'm officially caught up on the Planet Heglar blog! You're wonderful with words!
ReplyDeleteCaleb is newly antsy on his changing table too....but not the same...lately he cries when I go to change him, well fusses and yells....he doesn't mind being changed anywhere but there! so strange but what a pleasure watching these little ones evolve!!
