Happy Birthday to my husband!

Rocky’s 27th birthday was this past Sunday. We celebrated with my family the previous Wednesday by going out to dinner. We were also celebrating my Mom’s birthday. Tonight we’re having dinner with his family to celebrate. We’ll also be celebrating his Mom’s birthday.
As his birthday approached, I kept asking him what he wanted for a birthday gift. He always answered the same…”an RC car”, a Losi rock crawler to be exact. You see, it seems that my husband has been reintroduced to remote control cars by his friend Gomer Kyle. Kyle has some sort of RC truck and occasionally Rocky and Kyle get together and play with it. I think it usually ends with Rocky having to fix the thing but apparently they have fun none the less.
When I first picked up a clue that Rocky was playing around with RC cars, I happened to go with him to a hobby shop to see what was out there. WOW! RC cars are not cheap. Sure, you can get a cheap one at Wal-Mart or Target but hobby shops keep your high-end RC cars. Some of them cost hundreds, if not a thousand dollars. And get this, most of those don’t even come with a battery. So from the beginning, I was in sticker shock when it came to RC cars.
Well, for months now, Rocky has said he really wants an RC car that can climb rocks. Apparently they even have competitions to see who’s the best or fastest rock crawler, something I’ll probably never understand. But I suppose I don’t expect Rocky to understand scrapbooking or card making either. So I wasn’t surprised that leading up to his birthday all he wanted was money to purchase an RC car. Well, last night, he made his purchase.
We arrived at the hobby shop at 6:15pm. They close at 7:00pm. I would have thought he had already picked out what he wanted, knew the price, and that we would be in and out in seconds. Boy was I wrong! Although he knew which car he wanted, he had not picked out a battery or battery charger. And apparently there were a LOT to choose from. I kept reminding him of the time, as the young sales clerk kept eyeing her watch. Finally, at 7:05pm (5 minutes after the store unofficially closed), Rocky sets his Losi Night Crawler car on the counter. He also selects a battery and battery charger. He asks the owner if they can “make a deal”.
Now, keep in mind that Rocky has been ‘splained’ that he cannot use family funds for the purchase of an RC car. He CAN use 100% of HIS birthday money (and the money he won from work for his team winning the weight loss contest). He doesn’t remember participating in this vote but I assured him he was well represented in the decision. So, he counts out his money…one hundred…two hundred…three hundred…four hundred…and one, two, three, four, five dollars. Yes, you heard the correctly, $405 smackaroos.
The owner finished tallying up the total and tells Rocky that he can sell him all 3 things for $427. There was a moment of silence. The look on Rocky’s face was that of a little boy who had been saving up his newspaper money for weeks in hopes of buying a shiny new red bicycle. There was such disappointment. He dropped his head down and looked over at me with those puppy dog eyes and pouty lips. I felt so sorry for him yet I couldn’t help buy chuckle. He tried to renegotiate by changing out the battery for a different one but they still couldn’t agree on $405. Finally he decides to pay the difference using his bank account, which means I have a trump card to use some time in the future. Then, we run some errands and head home.
This is where the fun begins. We get home and I start boiling some eggs to go with the salad we’ll be having for dinner tonight. I hear some strange noises from the bedroom so I call out to him. There’s no answer. I continue on with washing up the remaining dishes and then I head down the hallway to get ready for bed. But what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature car and my sweet little dear. He had car parts strung out all over the bed and even some in the floor. I finish getting ready for bed and slide under the covers. I grab my phone to play a couple of games of Bejeweled before heading off to sleep. Suddenly…I hear a noise…a noise I’ll probably come to despise.
I’m lying in bed, playing my game, minding my own business when something starts to crawl up my leg and onto my stomach. There are headlights, 4 tires, and somewhere in the distance I can see a grin as big as the Grand Canyon. The car is alive and it’s coming after me. He proceeds several times to attempt to drive onto my chest. Once it rolls over, once it gets stuck in the covers, and once I may have inadvertently picked it up and laid it down on its back…but that’s just hearsay without video evidence. Finally he truck makes its way to its destination and comes to rest with 1 tire on my cheek…and I don’t mean the one attached to my back.
Yes, the car is actually resting on my face and my husband is loving every minute of it. Eventually they find their way into the spare bedroom and they attempt to climb the mound of paint cans we have amassed. And finally, I hear him reopen the box it put some things away and slide into bed with me. I have no idea what time this was but I’m pretty sure it was late. When I awoke this morning, I noticed the car was sitting on top of the dresser in our bedroom. I’m sure somewhere in the house the battery was connected to the battery charger. And when I get home from work today, I’m sure I’ll find him somewhere in the yard…crawling up a rock…grinning like a little boy.
Happy Birthday baby! I sure do love you a lot!!!
